Tips for eating right at holiday buffets
Chefs, hosts and caterers are experts in keeping food hot at holiday parties throughout the season. But, as many people know, indulging at an event can derail your weight loss plans and even cause some to pack on a few extra pounds.

According to BetterHealthUSA, a recent Weight Watchers study found that the average American gains between seven and ten pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

But there are ways of enjoying the variety of foods at parties, buffets, open houses and other events, while still keeping weight in control.

CBS News' Dr Jennifer Ashton suggests party-goers fill up on water and beware of calorie-laden alcoholic beverages.

When choosing food from a buffet, she encourages people to serve themselves one-third less to help save on calories. Using a smaller plate is often suggested by experts as a way to "trick" yourself into eating less.

Other experts say that eating healthy in the days leading up to parties and maintaining a regular exercise plan can also help offset any holiday splurges.

If you plant to host a holiday get together, remember to include some healthier options like veggies and low fat dips to give your friends and family options. And, make sure all of your dishes taste great by keeping food hot using wire chafing stands.
