| Nursing home food is not often equated with culinary skill, yet all of that may be changing as Genesis Healthcare announced a company-wide, food network-style cooking competition between its chefs held earlier in the month. Chefs representing the company's numerous East Coast extended care facilities will break into four teams of two and showcase their skills and style while raising some money for the senior care centers. The competition also called attention to the issue of nutrition as a central figure in the treatment of the elderly. Contestants prepared a number of dishes created specifically for the residents of their specific facilities including Perring chicken pizza, pork loin with stuffed spinach and tomato, Carolina gumbo and pan-seared salmon with Tzatziki sauce. The competition could also go a long way to reassure the children of people in nursing homes that their parents are being taken care of, says Elizabeth Large of the Baltimore Sun. Chefs preparing meals for a large number of guests might consider investing in dinner chafers. These safe and sturdy devices are ideal for keeping food hot during an extended food service and are easy to clean once the meal has ended. |
