| A group of students from Randy Smith Middle School in Fairbanks, Alaska, got a chance to prepare for a career in the culinary industry by touring the kitchen areas of a local hotel and see how a professional kitchen operates. Students visited the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge and watched executive chef Steve Frazier through his daily workload, and touring the facility's receiving, storage and kitchen areas. The seventh- and eighth-graders were also treated to a cooking demonstration on the safe preparation of Bananas Foster a la flambé. When cooking with an open flame in a kitchen, safe restaurant supplies are an absolute necessity. Chefs might consider investing in wire chafing dishes which can keep food hot separate from the flaming pans, reducing the fire risk presented by nearby food items. The cooking class was a result of a chance meeting on an overnight flight between the course's teacher Carla Yetter and the restaurant's manager Deb Vance in which the two hit it off and developed a working relationship geared towards Yetter's young charges, according to NewsMiner.com. Students were also treated to career advice from Vance and executive chef Steve Frazer including making a good first impression, remaining punctual and dressing professional. |
