| A group of aspiring chefs from Michigan will face off against local fire departments to see who has the superior skills at a cook-off fundraiser for local students. Though taste will be the ultimate deciding factor for the event, the secret to success may be who succeeds at keeping food hot before judging. Student chefs from the Romeo Engineering and Technology Center's culinary arts program will break into teams of four and go head-to-head with Romeo's bravest in a competition reminiscent of the television program Iron Chef. Teams will have two hours to complete a set of appetizers, entrees and desserts, with a panel of judges deciding which meal is the best in show. With limited prep time and multiple stages of the competition, keeping food hot is a serious concern for competitors. Entrants utilizing wire chafing stands to maintain the proper temperature and therefore taste, while paying attention to other dishes could have a decided advantage. The students recently told the Romeo Observer that they are anxious to show their skills, but are not looking past their worthy competition. "I think you kind of need to be both nervous and excited to do good, because if you go in thinking you're top dog then you're going to get eaten alive," said Kala Braet, a student competitor. "We're excited to see what the firefighters come up with and how well they compete." ![]() |
