Around 30 competitors from across the nation are expected to prepare and keep food hot for the inaugural Mesquite Open Dutch Oven Cook-off.<br/><br/>The winner will claim the impressive $5,000 purse.<br/><br/>The event&#39;s coordinator, Arlie Bragg, says chefs from several states including Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California have already inquired about competing.<br/><br/>Participants will prepare three pots with different items including breads, a main course and dessert, all cooked in Dutch ovens.<br/><br/>&quot;This is absolutely competitive,&quot; said Bragg, explaining that the contestants cook with charcoal. &quot;They will cook gourmet items like crown roasts and salmon. The cooks use tables that are 18-inches off the ground, and they have very strict rules. They will be judged on ingredients.             <description><![CDATA[Nearly 20 of Sacramento, California&#39;s finest chefs recently put their cooking skills to the test in a Thanksgiving turkey cook-off.<br/><br/>The competition, which is held each year, is sponsored by city councilman Rob Fong, according to the Sacramento Bee.<br/><br/>Area restaurants vying for the title included Buckhorn Grill, Cyprus Grille, Fox &amp; Goose, Ink Eats and Drinks, Mason&#39;s Restaurant, Jamie&#39;s Bar &amp; Grill, Mulvaney&#39;s Building &amp; Loan, Old Soul Company, River City Brewing Company, The Shady Lady Saloon, The Kitchen, Brew It Up, Buca Di Beppo, Cafeteria 15L, Vallejo&#39;s Restaurant and last year&#39;s winner, Hangar 17 Bar &amp; Grill.<br/><br/>Turkeys were prepared using a variety of ingredients, including maple syrup, cherrywood smoke, sage gravy, Chinese five-spice and whiskey, according to Capital Public Radio. One restaurant even prepared a &quot;beer-can bird&quot; and an Italian chef gave his turkey a Mediterranean twist.<br/><br/>A panel of celebrity judges rate the finished products on tenderness and flavor.<br/><br/>In the end, Jamie&#39;s Bar &amp; Grill&#39;s turkey took first place.<br/><br/>Leftovers were donated to a local organization that helps to feeds homeless people.<br/><br/>Besides being tender, juicy and flavorful, most chefs agree that turkey should be served hot.             <description><![CDATA[Volunteers in two Minnesota communities are working hard to prepare Thanksgiving meals as well as keep food hot this week.<br/><br/>The Duluth News Tribune reports that more than 800 volunteers have enlisted to prepare, serve and deliver free holiday meals at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center and 100 have agreed to help with the event at the Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet.<br/><br/>The event, which is known as the &quot;big feed,&quot; is in its 21st year. This year, organizers expect 4,000 guests in Duluth and more than 400 in Cloquet.<br /> In addition, volunteers will deliver more than 1,000 meals to homebound residents in the area.<br/><br/>According to event sponsor The College of St. Scholastica, the meal will include a turkey dinner with all the trimmings to members who are in need or would otherwise be alone on the holiday.<br/><br/>The college reports that the meal will consist of nearly 2,000 pounds of roast turkey, 2,000 pounds of potatoes, 400 pounds of sweet potatoes, 6,000 dinner rolls, 450 pounds each of salad, cranberry sauce, carrots and green beans as well as 150 gallons of gravy.<br/><br/>Those who plan on cooking up a big meal this year must be sure to take extra measures to prevent food from cooling off while it&#39;s on display.
